Introducing Children to Wild Meat

Eat Wild inspires the next generation, opening the door to the countryside and all it has to offer at the Glendale Children’s Countryside Day.

 

Eat Wild, the development board for British wild meat, introduces 1,700 5–11-year-olds from 40 different schools to wild game in Northumberland at Glendale Children’s Countryside Day. 

On Thursday 6th June 2024, Eat Wild took to Northumberland to offer children the opportunity to learn about British game and the benefits surrounding its consumption. The team served 1,200 portions of venison meatballs, 1,600 portions of pheasant sausage, and 8kg of venison & pheasant Bolognese to the children, many of whom had never tried wild meat before. The introduction even went as far as some of the teachers, who hadn’t heard of or tried wild game meat before. Children got the opportunity to touch a deer carcass, see the meat being butchered and then turned into sausages before tasting it with the Eat Wild team.

Established in 2004, this year celebrated the 18th anniversary of the Glendale Children’s Countryside Day, one of the foremost rural educational events in the UK. The one-day interactive educational event aims to give children of all abilities aged between 5 and 11 years from Northumberland and Tyne and Wear a first-hand experience of rural life. 

Exhibitors explained where food comes from and how it is produced, with an emphasis on giving a wider understanding of the countryside, the environment and the people who work in the rural economy. Agriculture and rural industries are the essence of the Glendale community and of wider Northumberland.
